73rd Amendment Act, 1992 (Panchayati Raj)

The act was passed in 1992 that gives constitutional status to Panchayati Raj institution. The act added to new part IX and 11th schedule.

Do you know? - There were 395 Articles and 8 Schedules in the constitution when it finally passed. But now there are 444 articles and 12 schedules.

This act is entitled as "The Panchayats" and consists of provisions from Article 243 to 243 (O). It consists of 29 functional items of the Panchayats. The Panchayati Raj system is only for states having more than 20 lakhs of population. The tenure of every Panchayat should be 5 years and election should be held 6 months before expiry of tenure.

Direct election held and seats for SC, ST and womans are preserved. Panchayat can collect appropriate taxes duties tolls and fees. The election is arranged by State Election Commission. The State Election commissioner is appointed by Governer. He can be removed in the same manner as judge of High court.
